How the Bush administration stopped the states from stepping in to help consumers.
Several years ago, state attorneys general and others involved in consumer protection began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the terms of loans, making loans without regard to consumers' ability to repay, making loans with deceptive "teaser" rates that later ballooned astronomically, packing loans with undisclosed charges and fees, or even paying illegal kickbacks. These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these practices, if left unchecked, threatened our financial markets.
Even though predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself with the banks that were victimizing consumers.
Predatory lending was widely understood to present a looming national crisis. This threat was so clear that as New York attorney general, I joined with colleagues in the other 49 states in attempting to fill the void left by the federal government. Individually, and together, state attorneys general of both parties brought litigation or entered into settlements with many subprime lenders that were engaged in predatory lending practices. Several state legislatures, including New York's, enacted laws aimed at curbing such practices.
What did the Bush administration do in response? Did it reverse course and decide to take action to halt this burgeoning scourge? As Americans are now painfully aware, with hundreds of thousands of homeowners facing foreclosure and our markets reeling, the answer is a resounding no.
Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.
Let me explain: The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal agency called the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC has been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure the fiscal soundness of national banks. For 140 years, the OCC examined the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an important but uncontroversial function. But a few years ago, for the first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool against consumers.
In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government's actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.
But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.
Throughout our battles with the OCC and the banks, the mantra of the banks and their defenders was that efforts to curb predatory lending would deny access to credit to the very consumers the states were trying to protect. But the curbs we sought on predatory and unfair lending would have in no way jeopardized access to the legitimate credit market for appropriately priced loans. Instead, they would have stopped the scourge of predatory lending practices that have resulted in countless thousands of consumers losing their homes and put our economy in a precarious position.
When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners, the Bush administration will not be judged favorably. The tale is still unfolding, but when the dust settles, it will be judged as a willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits. So willing, in fact, that it used the power of the federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures, as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of consumers.

One in 100 Americans in Prison:
For the first time in history, more than one in every 100 American adults is in jail or prison, according to a new report tracking the surge in inmate population and urging states to rein in corrections costs with alternative sentencing programs.
The report, released Thursday by the Pew Center on the States, said the 50 states spent more than $49 billion on corrections last year, up from less than $11 billion 20 years earlier. The rate of increase for prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending, the report said.
Using updated state-by-state data, the report said 2,319,258 adults were held in U.S. prisons or jails at the start of 2008 - one out of every 99.1 adults, and more than any other country in the world. Even more shocking is the fact that not even communist Russia or China at the height of their dictatorships had anywhere near as many people in jail.

Since 9/11, and seemingly without the notice of most Americans, the federal government has assumed the authority to institute martial law, arrest a wide swath of dissidents (citizen and noncitizen alike), and detain people without legal or constitutional recourse in the event of "an emergency influx of immigrants in the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs."
Beginning in 1999, the government has entered into a series of single-bid contracts with Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) to build detention camps at undisclosed locations within the United States. The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees.
According to diplomat and author Peter Dale Scott, the KBR contract is part of a Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of "all removable aliens" and "potential terrorists."
Fraud-busters such as Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, have complained about these contracts, saying that more taxpayer dollars should not go to taxpayer-gouging Halliburton. But the real question is: What kind of "new programs" require the construction and refurbishment of detention facilities in nearly every state of the union with the capacity to house perhaps millions of people?
Sect. 1042 of the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), "Use of the Armed Forces in Major Public Emergencies," gives the executive the power to invoke martial law. For the first time in more than a century, the president is now authorized to use the military in response to "a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, a terrorist attack or any other condition in which the President determines that domestic violence has occurred to the extent that state officials cannot maintain public order."
The Military Commissions Act of 2006, rammed through Congress just before the 2006 midterm elections, allows for the indefinite imprisonment of anyone who donates money to a charity that turns up on a list of "terrorist" organizations, or who speaks out against the government's policies. The law calls for secret trials for citizens and noncitizens alike.
Also in 2007, the White House quietly issued National Security Presidential Directive 51 (NSPD-51), to ensure "continuity of government" in the event of what the document vaguely calls a "catastrophic emergency." Should the president determine that such an emergency has occurred, he and he alone is empowered to do whatever he deems necessary to ensure "continuity of government." This could include everything from canceling elections to suspending the Constitution to launching a nuclear attack. Congress has yet to hold a single hearing on NSPD-51.
U.S. Rep. Jane Harman, D-Venice (Los Angeles County) has come up with a new way to expand the domestic "war on terror." Her Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 (HR1955), which passed the House by the lopsided vote of 404-6, would set up a commission to "examine and report upon the facts and causes" of so-called violent radicalism and extremist ideology, then make legislative recommendations on combatting it.
According to commentary in the Baltimore Sun, Rep. Harman and her colleagues from both sides of the aisle believe the country faces a native brand of terrorism, and needs a commission with sweeping investigative power to combat it.
A clue as to where Harman's commission might be aiming is the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, a law that labels those who "engage in sit-ins, civil disobedience, trespass, or any other crime in the name of animal rights" as terrorists. Other groups in the crosshairs could be anti-abortion protesters, anti-tax agitators, immigration activists, environmentalists, peace demonstrators, Second Amendment rights supporters ... the list goes on and on. According to author Naomi Wolf, the National Counterterrorism Center holds the names of roughly 775,000 "terror suspects" with the number increasing by 20,000 per month.
What could the government be contemplating that leads it to make contingency plans to detain without recourse millions of its own citizens?
The Constitution does not allow the executive to have unchecked power under any circumstances. The people must not allow the president to use the war on terrorism to rule by fear instead of by law.

Excellent movie, produced thanks to an enormous investment of time and money by the film-makers, and out of pocket donations from a very large number of citizens wanting the truth to shine forth. It deserves a wide distribution, hopefully also to a world-wide television audience.
It complements NuoViso.de’s “Unter Falscher Flagge”, which can already be seen on google-video with English sub-titles. The film “Zero” interviews many military and intelligence experts, some who I had not been listening to before. A highlight of the film is the wonderfully happy face of Dario Fo (1997 Italian Nobel Prize winner in Literature) who through-out the movie comments on certain known facts with his logic that should be grasped by the humanity loving child within each of us.

Although the US State department is irritated that European media and political institutions are more and more deeply questioning the “OFFICIAL MYTHformation” of the “War on Terror”, in the end, the US will be most inclined to change its ways only when the American people themselves inform themselves better on the full depth of the criminality and “false flag” deception of its current rogue administration. This is something that will not magically disappear by electing an “Obama”. The whole media and political institution needs a full renewal before it again can deserve the trust of us American citizens.

Ever since this “New American Century” “crazy” – Zelikow-parallel-universe-type neo-con administration stole the elections in 2000, we have had a systematic erosion of trust that could formerly be placed in the government’s alphabet list of institutions. The media has showed itself complicit in creating the “Terror” paradigm, which has turned out to be a P2OG government lie.
Every one of the complicit politicians and media people should be identified on a an internet site, with links to their incriminating stupidity that has led our formerly great country to become the currently most rogue danger to world peace and civilized life as we know it. If they would like to be taken off that list of shame, they would have to engage in actions that repair the horrible damage that they have done. If we start this quickly, and mobilize on many different levels, we will hopefully restore democracy in America, and our dignity as individuals, and as a nation.
We should also let ALL the presidential candidates know that the US people cannot trust any Candidate who refuses to come clean from the government lies surrounding 9/11, the ensuing government created climate of terror, and unprecedented lack of accountability and transparency of the executive, FEMA, private armies like Black-Water and MPRInc.
These were my own reflections this evening. The debate held in the European Parliament touched on several different issues, with soft spoken authorative David Ray Griffin being his usual brilliant self. His seventh book “911 Contradictions, an open letter to the Congress and the Press” is due out soon, but he has yet to be received for a serious review by any of the US large newspapers. Write to your papers to complain about this!
Yukihisa Fujita came across as a humanitarian, who had come across the extent of the deception with horror, and compassion for the people suffering in Afghanistan and Iraq. To him, we the citizens hold the upper hand, since we have the truth and the consciousness of the people on our side.
Watching these internet 911-truth movies is a good way to catch up from the empty-headed ridiculous mythformation we have been served out of the media owned by corporate and military companies, but it is not enough. We must graduate out from internet, and bring critical reasoning back to our universities, printed press, television, theatres and political institutions.
Thank-you all, for sharing your thoughts, insights and creative work on these forums; like M. Fujita says, they can say and do all they want, this movement will still hold the upper hand!

If they would like to be taken off that list of shame, they would have to engage in actions that repair the horrible damage that they have done. If we start this quickly, and mobilize on many different levels, we will hopefully restore democracy in America, and our dignity as individuals, and as a nation.
We should also let ALL the presidential candidates know that the US people cannot trust any Candidate who refuses to come clean from the government lies surrounding 9/11, the ensuing government created climate of terror, and unprecedented lack of accountability and transparency of the executive, FEMA, private armies like Black-Water and MPRInc.
These were my own reflections this evening. The debate held in the European Parliament touched on several different issues, with soft spoken authorative David Ray Griffin being his usual brilliant self. His seventh book “911 Contradictions, an open letter to the Congress and the Press” is due out soon, but he has yet to be received for a serious review by any of the US large newspapers. Write to your papers to complain about this!
Yukihisa Fujita came across as a humanitarian, who had come across the extent of the deception with horror, and compassion for the people suffering in Afghanistan and Iraq. To him, we the citizens hold the upper hand, since we have the truth and the consciousness of the people on our side.
Watching these internet 911-truth movies is a good way to catch up from the empty-headed ridiculous mythformation we have been served out of the media owned by corporate and military companies, but it is not enough. We must graduate out from internet, and bring critical reasoning back to our universities, printed press, television, theatres and political institutions.

Translation – He’s the guy who told the commissioners who would be interviewed, what questions would be asked, what evidence would be allowed and examined. He is the reason, for example, as to why the WTC-7 is not mentioned in the report, or why the Secret Services actions on that morning in Florida were never questioned, or why Norm Mineta’s testimony never made it into the report, or why the money trail was never pursued, and of course, he (and his office) are also the ones who wrote the final report; Kean and Hamilton merely the flunkies who put their names on it.
In a nutshell – Zelikow was Bush/Cheney’s guy on the inside; the guy responsible for establishing the bonifides of the official lies that would be come the official “story”.
Of interest in this video – we find out that Zelikow, in the late 90s, wrote a paper called “Catastrophic Terrorism” (1998), in which he probed the idea of how such an event or events could be used to push an agenda, one that would benefit the powers that be.
The other very interesting point made in this video – Zelikow’s Thesis in college was on “myths” and how to create them, and defend them in the face of facts. That indeed, the official “myth”, doesn’t need to be real, it just needs to be real enough in order to “sell it to a public”; and how much easier this task must have become over the past several decades, given that our once free press is (now) nothing more than a toothless old dog, bought and paid for with a juicy bone.

Book Charges Zelikow May Have Interfered With the 9/11 Commission's Report
The former executive director of the 9/11 Commission denies explosive charges of undisclosed ties to the Bush White House or interference with the panel's report.
The charges are said to be contained in New York Times reporter Philip Shenon's unreleased book, "The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation," according to Max Holland, an author and blogger, and generally confirmed by the book's publisher. Although the book is not slated to hit stores until early next month, Holland says he bought a copy of the audio version at a bookstore. (Attempts to purchase the book, in any format, at the Barnes & Noble across the street from ABC News headquarters were unsuccessful.)
9/11 Commission co-chairs Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton hired former Condoleezza Rice aide Philip Zelikow to be executive director, Zelikow failed to tell them about his role helping Rice set up President George W. Bush's National Security Council in early 2001 – and that he was "instrumental" in demoting Richard Clarke, the onetime White House counterterrorism czar who was fixated on the threat from Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, according to Holland's version of Shenon's tome.
"[Zelikow] had laid the groundwork for much of what went wrong at the White House in the weeks and months before September 11. Would he want people to know that?" Shenon writes, according to Holland.
Zelikow denied that was the case. "It was very well-known I had served on this transition team and had declined to go into the administration. I worked there for a total of one month. I had interviewed Sandy Berger, Dick Clarke and most of the NSC staff." He noted he recused himself from working on the section of the panel's report addressing the NSC transition, and that other staffers had held conflicting positions in the Clinton administration.
In his book, Shenon also says that while working for the panel, Zelikow appears to have had private conversations with former White House political director Karl Rove, despite a ban on such communication, according to Holland. Shenon reports that Zelikow later ordered his assistant to stop keeping a log of his calls, although the commission's general counsel overruled him, Holland wrote.

Man who set up Operation Gladio tells Italy's largest newspaper attacks were run by CIA, Mossad 
Former Italian President and the man who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio Francesco Cossiga has gone public on 9/11, telling Italy's most respected newspaper that the attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad and that this was common knowledge amongst global intelligence agencies.
Cossiga was elected President of the Italian Senate in July 1983 before winning a landslide 1985 election to become President of the country in 1985.
Cossiga gained respect from opposition parties as one of a rare breed - an honest politician - and led the country for seven years until April 1992.
Cossiga's tendency to be outspoken upset the Italian political establishment and he was forced to resign after revealing the existence of, and his part in setting up, Operation Gladio - a rogue intelligence network under NATO auspices that carried out bombings across Europe in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Gladio's specialty was to carry out what they coined "false flag operations," terror attacks that were blamed on their domestic and geopolitical opposition.
Cossiga's revelations contributed to an Italian parliamentary investigation of Gladio in 2000, during which evidence was unearthed that the attacks were being overseen by the U.S. intelligence apparatus.
In March 2001, Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
"You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force .. the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security."
Cossiga's new revelations appeared last week in Italy's oldest and most widely read newspaper, Corriere della Sera. Below appears a rough translation.

Senior American intelligence and defence officials believe that President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place America on the path to war with Iran, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. Pentagon planners have developed a list of up to 2,000 bombing targets in Iran, amid growing fears among serving officers that diplomatic efforts to slow Iran's nuclear weapons programme are doomed to fail.
Pentagon and CIA officers say they believe that the White House has begun a carefully calibrated programme of escalation that could lead to a military showdown with Iran.
Now it has emerged that Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution, is prepared to settle her differences with Vice-President Dick Cheney and sanction military action.
In a chilling scenario of how war might come, a senior intelligence officer warned that public denunciation of Iranian meddling in Iraq - arming and training militants - would lead to cross border raids on Iranian training camps and bomb factories.
A prime target would be the Fajr base run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force in southern Iran, where Western intelligence agencies say armour-piercing projectiles used against British and US troops are manufactured.
Under the theory - which is gaining credence in Washington security circles - US action would provoke a major Iranian response, perhaps in the form of moves to cut off Gulf oil supplies, providing a trigger for air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities and even its armed forces.
Senior officials believe Mr Bush's inner circle has decided he does not want to leave office without first ensuring that Iran is not capable of developing a nuclear weapon.
The intelligence source said: "No one outside that tight circle knows what is going to happen." But he said that within the CIA "many if not most officials believe that diplomacy is failing" and that "top Pentagon brass believes the same".
He said: "A strike will probably follow a gradual escalation. Over the next few weeks and months the US will build tensions and evidence around Iranian activities in Iraq." Previously, accusations that Mr Bush was set on war with Iran have come almost entirely from his critics.
Many senior operatives within the CIA are highly critical of Mr Bush's handling of the Iraq war, though they themselves are considered ineffective and unreliable by hardliners close to Mr Cheney.
The vice president is said to advocate the use of bunker-busting tactical nuclear weapons against Iran's nuclear sites. His allies dispute this, but Mr Cheney is understood to be lobbying for air strikes if sites can be identified where Revolutionary Guard units are training Shia militias.
Recent developments over Iraq appear to fit with the pattern of escalation predicted by Pentagon officials.
Gen David Petraeus, Mr Bush's senior Iraq commander, denounced the Iranian "proxy war" in Iraq last week as he built support in Washington for the US military surge in Baghdad.
The US also announced the creation of a new base near the Iraqi border town of Badra, the first of what could be several locations to tackle the smuggling of weapons from Iran.
A State Department source familiar with White House discussions said that Miss Rice, under pressure from senior counter-proliferation officials to acknowledge that military action may be necessary, is now working with Mr Cheney to find a way to reconcile their positions and present a united front to the President.

However, his last show was disappointing to me when he essentially marginalized anyone who has doubts about the official 9/11 story. By focusing only upon the controlled demolition theory of the Twin Towers, he excluded a more viable discussion of the collapse of building # 7 that was not hit by anything but the debris from towers 1 and 2. He further criticized those who have other doubts about the official story by intimating that it is ridiculous to believe that our government would attack its own people.

Senior American intelligence and defence officials believe that President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place America on the path to war with Iran, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. Pentagon planners have developed a list of up to 2,000 bombing targets in Iran, amid growing fears among serving officers that diplomatic efforts to slow Iran's nuclear weapons programme are doomed to fail.
Pentagon and CIA officers say they believe that the White House has begun a carefully calibrated programme of escalation that could lead to a military showdown with Iran.
Now it has emerged that Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution, is prepared to settle her differences with Vice-President Dick Cheney and sanction military action.
In a chilling scenario of how war might come, a senior intelligence officer warned that public denunciation of Iranian meddling in Iraq - arming and training militants - would lead to cross border raids on Iranian training camps and bomb factories.
A prime target would be the Fajr base run by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force in southern Iran, where Western intelligence agencies say armour-piercing projectiles used against British and US troops are manufactured.
Under the theory - which is gaining credence in Washington security circles - US action would provoke a major Iranian response, perhaps in the form of moves to cut off Gulf oil supplies, providing a trigger for air strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities and even its armed forces.
Senior officials believe Mr Bush's inner circle has decided he does not want to leave office without first ensuring that Iran is not capable of developing a nuclear weapon.
The intelligence source said: "No one outside that tight circle knows what is going to happen." But he said that within the CIA "many if not most officials believe that diplomacy is failing" and that "top Pentagon brass believes the same".
He said: "A strike will probably follow a gradual escalation. Over the next few weeks and months the US will build tensions and evidence around Iranian activities in Iraq." Previously, accusations that Mr Bush was set on war with Iran have come almost entirely from his critics.
Many senior operatives within the CIA are highly critical of Mr Bush's handling of the Iraq war, though they themselves are considered ineffective and unreliable by hardliners close to Mr Cheney.
The vice president is said to advocate the use of bunker-busting tactical nuclear weapons against Iran's nuclear sites. His allies dispute this, but Mr Cheney is understood to be lobbying for air strikes if sites can be identified where Revolutionary Guard units are training Shia militias.
Recent developments over Iraq appear to fit with the pattern of escalation predicted by Pentagon officials.
Gen David Petraeus, Mr Bush's senior Iraq commander, denounced the Iranian "proxy war" in Iraq last week as he built support in Washington for the US military surge in Baghdad.
The US also announced the creation of a new base near the Iraqi border town of Badra, the first of what could be several locations to tackle the smuggling of weapons from Iran.
A State Department source familiar with White House discussions said that Miss Rice, under pressure from senior counter-proliferation officials to acknowledge that military action may be necessary, is now working with Mr Cheney to find a way to reconcile their positions and present a united front to the President.

A new poll indicates that some 43 percent of Americans believe that Washington knew about the 9/11 attacks but did nothing to stop them. According to the Press TV-Zogby International poll, 42.5 percent of the respondents believed that the Bush Administration knew about the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center but did nothing to prevent the attacks. Only 37.5 percent of the respondents strongly disagreed with the idea and 4.5 percent neither agreed nor disagreed with it. Among the members of the armed forces who participated in the poll nearly 44 percent said that the US government had known about the plans for 9/11 attacks with 37.2 strongly disagreeing with it. The poll also indicates that a majority of Americans (56.3 percent), including the members of US armed forces, support the idea that the Bush Administration used the September 11 attacks as an excuse to push ahead with its own agenda, particularly in the Middle East and only 27.1 percent of respondents disagreed with it. Some 1006 people across the US were questioned by pollsters and the margin of error was +/- 3.2.

If President Bush doesn't make himself dictator it's only because he chooses not to do so, not because he lacks the means.
Indeed, we are all walking the streets today at the pleasure of the two gentlemen in the White House former Nixon counsel John Dean calls "co-presidents"- and whose regime, he warns, is "a dangerous threat to democracy."- (Read Dean's book, "Worse Than Watergate"-, published by Warner).
In fact, though, if anyone is pulling the strings to create a police state, it is Vice President Cheney. The former Halliburton CEO is tied closely both to those creating a private army and to those building massive new detention facilities.
As Charlie Savage wrote in The Boston Globe last November 26, "Cheney bypassed acts of Congress as defense secretary in the first Bush administration. And his office has been the driving force behind the current administration's hoarding of secrets, its efforts to impose greater political control over career officials, and its defiance of a law requiring the government to obtain warrants when wiretapping Americans. Cheney's staff has also been behind President Bush's record number of signing statements asserting his right to disregard laws."-
A chief architect of the "New American Century"- dogma, Cheney is no believer in international covenants. Rather, he thinks nuclear and biological warfare are "options,"- has no qualms about violating Geneva's proscription of torture, and justifies first-strike invasions. In short, Dick Cheney is a man who will stop at nothing.
In running any prison, or any prison state, the Warden has got to control the "three P's"- ---- policy, plant, and personnel --- and the Bush-Cheney White House is rapidly reaching that point with USA.
Concerning policy, our compliant Congress voted Mr. Bush unlimited power to arrest any person on his own say-so. Passage of the Military Commissions bill only provides support "for what the executive branch has already been doing over the past five years,"- writes Tom Head, author of About.Com: Civil Liberties. Head calls it "a terrible bill and should offend anyone who cares about human rights, regardless of party affiliation."-
As for personnel, Naomi Wolf in her book "The End of America"-(Chelsea Green) points to Blackwater USA, of Moycock, N.C., as "the world's largest private security force (that) works closely with Halliburton, and is available for action outside the scrutiny of Congress."-
Wolf writes that, as of fall 2006, Blackwater "was on track to train thirty-five thousand men over the following twelve months."- And she continues, "Blackwater's business model plans increasingly to deploy its unaccountable private army in the U.S.---in the aftermath of natural disasters, and also in cases of "-national emergency.'"-
Bill Mathews, Executive Vice President of Blackwater USA says the 35,000 people trained by Blackwater "were ACTIVE DUTY SERVICEMEN (mostly from the Navy)"- and that his company's "primary business is training the US Military, much the same as Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, SAIC or many other government service providers."-Mathews says Blackwater employs "approximately 2,000 people working overseas"- and "Not all of these people are doing security work."- He points out "Some are cooks, trainers, and construction workers."-
He goes on to say: "Blackwater has never done any work for or with KBR. We performed one job which lasted about 60 days for one of their subcontractors in 2004, but never anything else. We don't know any of their management, staff or personnel. We have never bid on one of their contracts. To say that we "-work closely' together is not even close to the truth."-
Mathews continues, "Sherwood, I realize there are people who don't like US veterans (yes, we are ALL US veterans) serving their country in this capacity. We would die defending your right to criticize us"-but I don't think it's too much to ask that you at least do a little research before putting pen to paper."-

The author appreciates Blackwater's response and has reprinted it in its entirety. Nowhere in this article, however, is there any statement by the author, who is a veteran, that he does not like US veterans.)
Halliburton KBR subsidiary got a $385 million Department of Homeland Security(DHS) contract to build new detention facilities, so there's your physical plant or plants in development. KBR's announcement gave no details as to where the prisons would be built or when --- a stunning omission from customary public relations work.
In January of last year, when KBR announced it contract for "temporary detention facilities"--- each of which can hold 5,000 prisoners--- the rationale given was an "immigration emergency." Yet, as Margaret Kimberley noted on ZNet, "Thanks to the Patriot Act and the creation of "enemy combatants' these detention centers can be used to lock up anyone for any reason for any length of time that Uncle Sam wants."
Halliburton, of course, is beholden to Cheney. He is no longer CEO but he is so tied to his former firm he lied to conceal its illegal acts. Cheney told ABC's Sam Donaldson that none of its subsidiaries prior to the invasion did business with Iraq. The firm's Vice Chairman Donald Vaughn later conceded a subsidiary did do just that, Dean writes, and The Washington Post showed Halliburton sold more than $73 million in oil production parts and equipment to Saddam Hussein, making it the Number One offender. Thus, Cheney covers for Halliburton.
Again, is it really possible Bush-Cheney would create a police state in America? The above essay is conjecture, but what are Americans supposed to think when the co-presidents have lowered a Stalinist Iron Curtain of secrecy around their operations and covered it from coast to coast with a web of lies? After having lied the nation into a war of aggression that has killed more than a million human beings, the co-presidents have zero credibility, so why should anyone believe the creation of a private army and secret detention facilities on U.S. soil do not present a clear and present danger to Americans?
In Dec., 2003, U.S. News & World Report issued a special report on administration secrecy, concluding, the Bush-Cheney actions are "a reversal of a decades-long trend of openness in government"- and have "placed large amounts of information out of the reach of ordinary citizens,"- including consumer information that is "critical health and safety information potentially affecting millions of Americans."-
So ask yourself, what kinds of governments revel in secrecy, make illegal wars, lie to their Legislatures and refuse to execute their laws, open their citizens' mail, listen in to their phone conversations, prevent or harass their travels, ban foreign scholars from entering, torture prisoners, violate humanitarian, nuclear and germ warfare treaties, build detention camps and use private armies? You know the answer.

Indeed, we are all walking the streets today at the pleasure of the two gentlemen in the White House former Nixon counsel John Dean calls "co-presidents"- and whose regime, he warns, is "a dangerous threat to democracy."- (Read Dean's book, "Worse Than Watergate"-, published by Warner).
In fact, though, if anyone is pulling the strings to create a police state, it is Vice President Cheney. The former Halliburton CEO is tied closely both to those creating a private army and to those building massive new detention facilities.
As Charlie Savage wrote in The Boston Globe last November 26, "Cheney bypassed acts of Congress as defense secretary in the first Bush administration. And his office has been the driving force behind the current administration's hoarding of secrets, its efforts to impose greater political control over career officials, and its defiance of a law requiring the government to obtain warrants when wiretapping Americans. Cheney's staff has also been behind President Bush's record number of signing statements asserting his right to disregard laws."-
A chief architect of the "New American Century"- dogma, Cheney is no believer in international covenants. Rather, he thinks nuclear and biological warfare are "options,"- has no qualms about violating Geneva's proscription of torture, and justifies first-strike invasions. In short, Dick Cheney is a man who will stop at nothing.
In running any prison, or any prison state, the Warden has got to control the "three P's"- ---- policy, plant, and personnel --- and the Bush-Cheney White House is rapidly reaching that point with USA.
Concerning policy, our compliant Congress voted Mr. Bush unlimited power to arrest any person on his own say-so. Passage of the Military Commissions bill only provides support "for what the executive branch has already been doing over the past five years,"- writes Tom Head, author of About.Com: Civil Liberties. Head calls it "a terrible bill and should offend anyone who cares about human rights, regardless of party affiliation."-
As for personnel, Naomi Wolf in her book "The End of America"-(Chelsea Green) points to Blackwater USA, of Moycock, N.C., as "the world's largest private security force (that) works closely with Halliburton, and is available for action outside the scrutiny of Congress."-
Wolf writes that, as of fall 2006, Blackwater "was on track to train thirty-five thousand men over the following twelve months."- And she continues, "Blackwater's business model plans increasingly to deploy its unaccountable private army in the U.S.---in the aftermath of natural disasters, and also in cases of "-national emergency.'"-
Bill Mathews, Executive Vice President of Blackwater USA says the 35,000 people trained by Blackwater "were ACTIVE DUTY SERVICEMEN (mostly from the Navy)"- and that his company's "primary business is training the US Military, much the same as Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, SAIC or many other government service providers."-Mathews says Blackwater employs "approximately 2,000 people working overseas"- and "Not all of these people are doing security work."- He points out "Some are cooks, trainers, and construction workers."-
He goes on to say: "Blackwater has never done any work for or with KBR. We performed one job which lasted about 60 days for one of their subcontractors in 2004, but never anything else. We don't know any of their management, staff or personnel. We have never bid on one of their contracts. To say that we "-work closely' together is not even close to the truth."-
Mathews continues, "Sherwood, I realize there are people who don't like US veterans (yes, we are ALL US veterans) serving their country in this capacity. We would die defending your right to criticize us"-but I don't think it's too much to ask that you at least do a little research before putting pen to paper."-
(Author's Note: The charge that KBR "works closely"- with Halliburton appears in Ms. Wolf's book, which was quoted verbatim from page 74. The author appreciates Blackwater's response and has reprinted it in its entirety. Nowhere in this article, however, is there any statement by the author, who is a veteran, that he does not like US veterans.)
Halliburton KBR subsidiary got a $385 million Department of Homeland Security(DHS) contract to build new detention facilities, so there's your physical plant or plants in development. KBR's announcement gave no details as to where the prisons would be built or when --- a stunning omission from customary public relations work.
In January of last year, when KBR announced it contract for "temporary detention facilities"--- each of which can hold 5,000 prisoners--- the rationale given was an "immigration emergency." Yet, as Margaret Kimberley noted on ZNet, "Thanks to the Patriot Act and the creation of "enemy combatants' these detention centers can be used to lock up anyone for any reason for any length of time that Uncle Sam wants."
Halliburton, of course, is beholden to Cheney. He is no longer CEO but he is so tied to his former firm he lied to conceal its illegal acts. Cheney told ABC's Sam Donaldson that none of its subsidiaries prior to the invasion did business with Iraq. The firm's Vice Chairman Donald Vaughn later conceded a subsidiary did do just that, Dean writes, and The Washington Post showed Halliburton sold more than $73 million in oil production parts and equipment to Saddam Hussein, making it the Number One offender. Thus, Cheney covers for Halliburton.
Again, is it really possible Bush-Cheney would create a police state in America? The above essay is conjecture, but what are Americans supposed to think when the co-presidents have lowered a Stalinist Iron Curtain of secrecy around their operations and covered it from coast to coast with a web of lies? After having lied the nation into a war of aggression that has killed more than a million human beings, the co-presidents have zero credibility, so why should anyone believe the creation of a private army and secret detention facilities on U.S. soil do not present a clear and present danger to Americans?
In Dec., 2003, U.S. News & World Report issued a special report on administration secrecy, concluding, the Bush-Cheney actions are "a reversal of a decades-long trend of openness in government"- and have "placed large amounts of information out of the reach of ordinary citizens,"- including consumer information that is "critical health and safety information potentially affecting millions of Americans."-

He does not have the means to do so, or, perhaps, even he is not foolish enough to engage in such an enterprise. While the momentum for the Sept. 15 Peace/Impeachment demonstration grows, the Bush Administration is going to extraordinary lengths to suppress the mobilizing for this mass demonstration. Less than 18 hours ago, National Park Service Police turned a September 15 Press Conference, held in front of the White House, into a chaotic scene. On the pretext that there was no permit for a three foot long folding table that the media placed their microphones on, the police intervened in the middle of the press conference to announce that it was an unpermitted activity. Three people were arrested and are still being held in jail. They include Adam Kokesh, an Iraq war veteran; Tina Richards of Grassroots America; and Ian Thompson an ANSWER Coalition organizer. The Parks Police even rode a horse directly into the crowd of reporters and shocked onlookers. The National Parks Police is an agency in the Interior Department whose Secretary is a member of George W. Bush's cabinet. In recent weeks September 15 organizers have been fined more than $30,000 for putting up posters promoting the September 15 March on Washington.

The Truth has Allies
U.S. Navy 'Top Gun' Pilot Questions 9/11
September 5, 2007 - U.S. Navy ‘Top Gun’ pilot, Commander Ralph Kolstad, started questioning the official account of 9/11 within days of the event. “It just didn’t make any sense to me,” he said. And now 6 years after 9/11 he says, “When one starts using his own mind, and not what one was told, there is very little to believe in the official story.”
Now retired, Commander Kolstad was a top-rated fighter pilot during his 20-year Navy career. Early in his career, he was accorded the honor of being selected to participate in the Navy’s ‘Top Gun’ air combat school, officially known as the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School. The Tom Cruise movie, “Top Gun” reflects the experience of the young Navy pilots at the school. Eleven years later, Commander Kolstad was further honored by being selected to become a ‘Top Gun’ adversary instructor. While in the Navy, he flew F-4 Phantoms, A-4 Skyhawks, and F-14 Tomcats and completed 250 aircraft carrier landings.
Commander Kolstad had a second career after his 20 years of Navy active and reserve service and served as a commercial airline pilot for 27 years, flying for American Airlines and other domestic and international careers. He flew Boeing 727, 757 and 767, McDonnell Douglas MD-80, and Fokker F-100 airliners. He has flown a total of over 23,000 hours in his career.
Commander Kolstad is especially critical of the account of American Airlines Flight 77 that allegedly crashed into the Pentagon. He says, “At the Pentagon, the pilot of the Boeing 757 did quite a feat of flying. I have 6,000 hours of flight time in Boeing 757’s and 767’s and I could not have flown it the way the flight path was described.”
Commander Kolstad adds, “I was also a Navy fighter pilot and Air Combat Instructor and have experience flying low altitude, high speed aircraft. I could not have done what these beginners did. Something stinks to high heaven!”
He points to the physical evidence at the Pentagon impact site and asks in exasperation, “Where is the damage to the wall of the Pentagon from the wings? Where are the big pieces that always break away in an accident? Where is all the luggage? Where are the miles and miles of wire, cable, and lines that are part and parcel of any large aircraft? Where are the steel engine parts? Where is the steel landing gear? Where is the tail section that would have broken into large pieces?” But no major element of the official account of 9/11 is spared from Commander Kolstad’s criticism. Regarding the alleged impact site of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, PA, he asks, “Where is any of the wreckage? Of all the pictures I have seen, there is only a hole! Where is any piece of a crashed airplane? Why was the area cordoned off, and no inspection allowed by the normal accident personnel? Where is any evidence at all?”
Commander Kolstad also questions many aspects of the attack on the World Trade Center. “How could a steel and concrete building collapse after being hit by a Boeing 767? Didn’t the engineers design it to withstand a direct hit from a Boeing 707, approximately the same size and weight of the 767? The evidence just doesn’t add up."
"Why did the second building collapse before the first one, which had been burning for 20 minutes longer after a direct hit, especially when the second one hit was just a glancing blow? If the fire was so hot, then why were people looking out the windows and in the destroyed areas? Why have so many members of the New York Fire Department reported seeing or hearing many ‘explosions’ before the buildings collapsed?”
Commander Kolstad summarized his frustration with the investigation and disbelief of the official account of 9/11, “If one were to act as an accident investigator, one would look at the evidence, and then construct a plausible scenario as to what led to the accident. Dick Cheney has ordered top Neo-Con media outlets, including Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, to unleash a PR blitz to sell a war with Iran from today, according to Barnett Rubin, the highly respected Afghanistan expert at New York University.
The New Yorker magazine reports that Rubin had a conversation with a member of a top neoconservative institution in Washington, who told him that "instructions" had been passed on from the Office of the Vice-President to roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day.
"It will be coordinated with the American Enterprise Institute, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Commentary, Fox, and the usual suspects, writes Rubin, "It will be heavy sustained assault on the airwaves, designed to knock public sentiment into a position from which a war can be maintained. Evidently they don’t think they’ll ever get majority support for this—they want something like 35-40 percent support, which in their book is “plenty.”
September 5, 2007 - U.S. Navy ‘Top Gun’ pilot, Commander Ralph Kolstad, started questioning the official account of 9/11 within days of the event. “It just didn’t make any sense to me,” he said. And now 6 years after 9/11 he says, “When one starts using his own mind, and not what one was told, there is very little to believe in the official story.”
Now retired, Commander Kolstad was a top-rated fighter pilot during his 20-year Navy career. Early in his career, he was accorded the honor of being selected to participate in the Navy’s ‘Top Gun’ air combat school, officially known as the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School. The Tom Cruise movie, “Top Gun” reflects the experience of the young Navy pilots at the school. Eleven years later, Commander Kolstad was further honored by being selected to become a ‘Top Gun’ adversary instructor. While in the Navy, he flew F-4 Phantoms, A-4 Skyhawks, and F-14 Tomcats and completed 250 aircraft carrier landings.
Commander Kolstad had a second career after his 20 years of Navy active and reserve service and served as a commercial airline pilot for 27 years, flying for American Airlines and other domestic and international careers. He flew Boeing 727, 757 and 767, McDonnell Douglas MD-80, and Fokker F-100 airliners. He has flown a total of over 23,000 hours in his career.
Commander Kolstad is especially critical of the account of American Airlines Flight 77 that allegedly crashed into the Pentagon. He says, “At the Pentagon, the pilot of the Boeing 757 did quite a feat of flying. I have 6,000 hours of flight time in Boeing 757’s and 767’s and I could not have flown it the way the flight path was described.”
Commander Kolstad adds, “I was also a Navy fighter pilot and Air Combat Instructor and have experience flying low altitude, high speed aircraft. I could not have done what these beginners did. Something stinks to high heaven!”
He points to the physical evidence at the Pentagon impact site and asks in exasperation, “Where is the damage to the wall of the Pentagon from the wings? Where are the big pieces that always break away in an accident? Where is all the luggage? Where are the miles and miles of wire, cable, and lines that are part and parcel of any large aircraft? Where are the steel engine parts? Where is the steel landing gear? Where is the tail section that would have broken into large pieces?” But no major element of the official account of 9/11 is spared from Commander Kolstad’s criticism. Regarding the alleged impact site of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, PA, he asks, “Where is any of the wreckage? Of all the pictures I have seen, there is only a hole! Where is any piece of a crashed airplane? Why was the area cordoned off, and no inspection allowed by the normal accident personnel? Where is any evidence at all?”
Commander Kolstad also questions many aspects of the attack on the World Trade Center. “How could a steel and concrete building collapse after being hit by a Boeing 767? Didn’t the engineers design it to withstand a direct hit from a Boeing 707, approximately the same size and weight of the 767? The evidence just doesn’t add up."
"Why did the second building collapse before the first one, which had been burning for 20 minutes longer after a direct hit, especially when the second one hit was just a glancing blow? If the fire was so hot, then why were people looking out the windows and in the destroyed areas? Why have so many members of the New York Fire Department reported seeing or hearing many ‘explosions’ before the buildings collapsed?”
Commander Kolstad summarized his frustration with the investigation and disbelief of the official account of 9/11, “If one were to act as an accident investigator, one would look at the evidence, and then construct a plausible scenario as to what led to the accident.
